The old venitian palace of capitano- a new classical hotel now-Youth Hostel Heraklion/ Το νεοκλασσικό ξενοδοχείο της οδού Λόρδου Βύρωνος
Down from Morozini fountain inside what is now Theotokopoulos park , there were running 2 Venetian palaces during Venetian occupation in Heraklion, Crete, the city so called Handakas at that time.
The first on the left side while we are getting down Theotokopoulou street, the Palace of the Venetian duke and on the right the palace of capitano (commander in chied). Turning the corner of Theotokopoulou street on Lord Byron's streer (Lordou Vyronos) on the corner, there is the new classical house been founded inside the borders of the Venetian palace of capitano, and in number 5, there is the second new classiacal building, which is also sited inside the borders of the capitano palace, and like the other one, it is also build with the stones taken from the capitano palace after that was abonded and demolished by earthquakes during 19th century.
In our time there is a hotel named Youth hostel Heraklion, and you can see how it is inside in the photos above. Operating as a hostel since 1987, there has been a tunnel running down from it, a tunnel built by the Venetians, connecting Koule, the fourtress of the sea, with Jesus' gate (kainouria porta= new gate) in the end of Evans street, for the escape of capitano and his soldiers in case of a siege of the town by enemies. Down side the new classical in the corner Theotokopoulou and Lordou Vyronos street there was also another twin tunnel connecting st Mark's cathedral with Koule, for the escape of the Venetian duke and his family in case of siege.
So starting from Callergi' Square (where Morozini's fountain lies) down to the right of Theotokopoulos park turning the street in Lordou Vyronos, and up to Almyrou street coming up from Halkiadakis super market and back up to Kallergi' square, these were the borders of the capitano palace.
Now a beautiful new classical hotel, clean and cozy, with a kitcen inside and in its balcony, with the feel of a home, and a warm welcoming hostess, with a great environment inside and outside. In it's roof and from it's front balconies we can see a part of the old city behind the walls of the Byzantine Emperor Nikiforos Fokas, who liberated Crete from the Arabs in 10th centrury. The complex system of rooms now seen, is believed to be an arabic industrial complex inside the sequence of the city walls and the destroyed church of St Cathrine found in Bedenaki, in the sea front, down from Theotokopoulou street, just around the corner, and this old arabic complex goes on through 25th of August street in Epimenidou street (but non visible there) to the corner on the other side.
At the plot right across the hostel has been found parts of pseudo-isodome wall with monolithic beams especially large sized. In the center of the plot a well or shaft was found, with a peritoneum andstone slab overlaying a stone that was raised on a pedestal of four columns. The floor appears to have been paved, while for communication between the rooms there were entrances with pilasters and thresholds that were often members of earlier constructions. There was also found clay water pipes and sewerage, two circular tanks and several mobile findings. The remains of the monument are located in lower than the current level ground. The Arab craft complex enclosed now by a high sheet metal fence elennite blocking the view inside, is not visible from the street level. Important obstacles to the promotion of the monument are also, the large amount of waste in the plot, as well as the unregulated vegetation.
So now the complex is visible only through the hostel's balconies and roof.
As it was seen during descovery, before adandoned and filled with wild plants
